Labuan: Labuan is a political stronghold of the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Federal Territories but this should not be taken for granted.
"This is why I have taken a personal interest in Labuan and made the Umno Youth division my adopted one. I make it a point to be in Labuan whenever there is a need," said Umno Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
"We must make sure being quite a distance from Kuala Lumpur will not mean isolated politically or marginalised," he said.
Khairy was here to open the Umno Youth-organised futsal competition, which was participated by some 600.
The competition was among ongoing programmes of Umno to reach out to more youths.
"We also do it through welfare projects," he said, adding Umno Youth would hold more such events that involve youths.
During the competition, a voter registration counter was also set up, through which they hoped to sign up 100.
Recently, it was reported that Umno Youth was targeting 50,000 new members this year, which was double the number they managed to sign up last year.
A new logo and tagline for Umno Youth would also be introduced when the national campaign is launched in Kedah by Kedah Umno Liaison Chief Datuk Seri Shafie Mohd Apdal.
Khairy denied the new logo and tagline were because the youth movement was losing its impact among youths.
"The new logo and tagline are to 'refresh' the image of Umno Youth.
The core activities of Umno Youth remain the same," he said.
On allegations that Umno members were involved in the church attacks in Kuala Lumpur, Khairy said they were politically motivated.
He also said the opposition had run out of ideas and many of their senior members had relinquished their positions.
